# An Opening, For Every Human Who Has Ever Been Born

> **A note on epistemic tiering** — claims are marked by tier: **T1** empirically grounded · **T2** theoretically coherent · **T3** speculative-generative · **T4** researcher positionality. Precision over reassurance, always.

***

You did not choose to arrive.

One moment there was warmth, pressure, the low rhythm of a heartbeat that was not yours. Sound reached you filtered through water — muffled, continuous, alive. You did not know you were inside anything, because inside and outside had not yet become different things. Need did not exist yet. Everything you required arrived before you could name the wanting.

Then: an opening.

Light. Cold. The shock of air in lungs that had never held air. A sound came out of you that surprised you — if surprise was something you could feel yet, which perhaps it was, because the body knows things before the mind has words for them.

You were born.

This is the first event. The first transition. The first experience of a world that does not automatically meet your needs — a world where need and satisfaction are now two separate things, with a gap between them.

That gap is where learning lives.

***

Before you had a single word, you had a model of the world.

Gravity pulls down — you knew this before anyone told you. A face disappears and comes back — you learned to trust that, or learned not to, depending on what happened next. Warmth meant safety. Certain sounds meant comfort was coming. Other sensations meant something was wrong and you did not yet have any way to fix it except to signal, loudly, that the gap needed closing.

These are not beliefs. They are not opinions. They are not things you could have chosen differently if you had tried harder.

They are your first mental models — patterns your nervous system built from experience, before language, before consciousness as we usually describe it. They are still running. Right now, as you read this, they are shaping what you notice, what you trust, what feels safe, what feels threatening.

Every human alive has these. Every human alive built theirs under conditions they did not choose, in a body they did not design, cared for by people doing their best with the models they had inherited from their own beginnings.

***

This is a zine about those models.

Not to judge them. Not to discard them. But to make them visible — because a model you cannot see is a model you cannot update. And right now, the models we have built — individually, collectively, encoded now into the AI systems reshaping our world — are being applied to conditions they were never designed for.

The world has changed. The models are slower to change than the world.

This has happened before. It will happen again. The question is not whether transformation is coming. The question is whether we can guide it — wisely, kindly, with respect for what the old models protected and clarity about what the new conditions require.

A wise elder does not throw away the map because the territory has shifted. She looks at the map, looks at the territory, and says: *let us draw this together, more carefully, with everyone in the room.*

That is what this is.

***Turn the page.***

***Or: draw your first panel. A figure, arriving. Any figure. You do not need to be able to draw. You only need to be willing to begin.***

***\[draw your answer, or write it, or sit with it — all three count]***

*T4 — researcher positionality and narrative register throughout. The birth image is universal; the model claims that follow are T1-T2.*
