# Modeling Pedagogy For AI Literacy

Most guides to AI teach you *about* AI — how it works, what to watch out for, how not to be fooled. This one does something different.

This zine treats AI literacy as **information modeling literacy.** The skill it builds is not memorizing facts about machines. It is learning to build flexible models, hold several at once, cross between domains you don't personally command, and tell signal from noise — using AI systems as instruments that augment or extend your reach.

The reason is simple. As these ***automated information processing systems*** grow more capable, the risks and the opportunities will not arrive labeled. They will be woven into fluent, plausible, helpful-seeming output — hidden in the noise. No checklist of warning signs can keep up, because the signs change faster than any list. What does keep up is ***a practice***: the habit of meeting any model — and any machine — by asking ***what is true, what is uncertain, what is false, and what is being left out***. Asked often enough, that habit becomes automatic, the way balance becomes automatic on a bike.

So the whole zine is, in a sense, a gym for information and relational discernment. The glossary's **"take it further"** prompts are repetitions. The tools are repetition-generators. The questions between the panels are repetitions. You are not being handed conclusions to keep. You are building a capacity to carry — curiosity and discernment, practiced until they hold under pressure.

And one thing makes all the difference in how that capacity gets used. The same skill that lets a person see clearly in the noise can serve care or serve extraction. ***Discernment aimed at minimizing harm is wisdom***. The identical cleverness aimed at advantage is just manipulation wearing a sophisticated mask. What you are building here is meant to be steered by **kindness** — toward yourself, toward others, toward the living systems we are all part of. That direction is the whole point.

### The practice begins here

So how do you actually train the dragon?

You do not slay it and you do not surrender to it. You learn to read the terrain, and you learn to ride. That begins with one small repetition, done so often it becomes reflex. Whenever a model — or a machine — hands you something, meet it with four questions:

* **What is true here?** What holds up, what is well supported?
* **What is uncertain?** What is contested, unknown, still moving?
* **What is false here?** What is the overclaim, the myth, the sleight of hand?
* **What is left out?** Whose view, whose stake, whose harm is missing from the frame?

These four are the whole rep. Asked once, they clarify a single answer. Asked a thousand times, they become how you move through a landscape — the way an experienced traveler reads a slope before crossing it.

And the terrain is real. The digital world is not a gentle place built for your wellbeing. It is a powerful, fast, largely unmapped environment where some of the strongest currents are designed to capture attention, provoke, and extract — with real consequences in real lives. Reading it clearly is not cynicism; it is competence. To travel terrain like this without learning to read it is not innocence. It is simply unprepared.

But reading the terrain is not the same as fearing it. A skilled traveler takes the danger completely seriously *and* stays curious, because fear narrows your vision exactly when you need it widest. The four questions are how you stay clear-eyed without clamping shut: they let you meet a powerful landscape with discernment rather than alarm. That is the difference between being carried by the current and learning to ride it.

There is one more move, and it is the one the whole zine turns on. After the four questions, ask a fifth:

> **Is this curious, trustworthy, and useful — and does it return me to the living world?**

Because here is the hidden truth. All of this discernment, all of this modeling, all of this practice with machines — it is in service of a life lived *off the screen,* in contact with real bodies, real weather, real work, real others. The point was never to live better in the digital landscape. **The point is to move through it with enough skill that it returns you, again and again, to what is actually alive.** Discernment is how you keep the tool a tool. Kindness is the direction you point it. The analog world is where you are always headed.

That is the practice. The pages and prompts that follow are where you begin it.
