# The Designer's Oath

***

### First, do no harm.

I have spent my career teaching that design is a responsibility, not a skill set.

In engineering, it is institutionally possible — often encouraged — to separate the artifact from its impact. To teach the system without teaching what the system does to the people inside it. To graduate students who can build anything and have never been asked: *what harm might this cause, and to whom?*

Arts and Technology does not permit this separation. The studio is where that question lives. An experience designer who does not understand the impact of their design on the viewer is not a designer — they are a production unit.

This is the Hippocratic frame: *first, do no harm.* It is not a constraint on creativity. It is the ground condition that makes creativity trustworthy.

### The medium is the environment

I take photographs on my phone. The phone contains AI — in the camera optics processing, in the photo organization, in the content the platform surfaces next. ***AI is not somewhere else. It is in the device in your pocket, mediating every encounter between your attention and the world.***

This is not a reason to put the device down. It is a reason to understand what the device is doing, who designed it to do that, and in whose interest.

The digital content environment was built with specific incentive structures: toward engagement, extraction, and profit. It surfaces content optimized for reaction, not reflection. For addiction, not understanding. When people encounter disturbing, confusing, or manipulative content, the culturally conditioned response is often shame — which suppresses the very conversation that could help.

> **The antidote is administered through the same medium as the toxin.**

That is the opportunity. Not to reject the devices, but to use them — deliberately, with craft, with the designer's oath intact — to develop immunity to the harms they can also cause. To be a role model for love, kindness, and beauty in the places where humans are encountering harm.

***This is what artists are for***. This is why the artist's instinct — to make something that opens rather than closes, that heals rather than extracts, that remembers the body rather than replacing it — is not a luxury in the current information environment. It is the most urgent form of public health work available.

### What the institution could not hear

The following poem was generated using [FredTheHeretic (FTH)](https://chatgpt.com/g/g-XmhqgURbv-fredtheheretic-fth/), a generative poetry tool created by Paul Fishwick based on the poetry of Fred Turner. It was generated from lived experience — raw material transformed through craft and tool into something that can be received without requiring the reader to carry the specific wound it came from.

***A campus lawn under sodium light, white boards ghosted with half-erased systems, arrows of arrows pointing nowhere except back into themselves.***

*I carried diagrams like weather: feedback loops, braided flows,* *hands open with chalk dust,* *trying to show how a forest thinks without a king.*

*But the rooms were built like factories—* *fluorescent ribs, timed bells, power moving in straight lines,* *questions stamped, graded, archived.*

***I spoke of holarchy: nodes that listen, circuits that feel their own heat, organisms that fail and mend without permission.***

*They answered with titles, with doors that close softly,* *with meetings that smell like varnish and old decisions.*

*In the margins of their silence I drew a different map:* *not a ladder, not a throne,* *but a river folding into itself, a delta of choices breathing.*

*There was harm here—* *sharp as broken glass in a lab sink,* *polite as an email sent at midnight.*

*I learned the texture of exclusion:* *a hand not shaken, a credit misplaced,* *the quiet theft of a living idea translated into sterile language.*

*Still— something refused collapse.*

*Call it **grandmother-memory**, call it the body knowing seasons,* *call it the long patience of cells repairing what they inherit.*

*In that knowing I saw the hyper-object of us:* *a species thinking it is separate* *while stitched into every field it burns.*

***The models we build become the rooms we live in.***

*So I began again— not louder, not sharper, but differently arranged.*

*A Markov of kindness: state to state, choice to choice,* *a transition probability of care increasing by use.*

*Dignity as policy of motion.* *Love as the only stable attractor.*

*I tell my students: the system is not the diagram.* *The diagram is a wound trying to heal.*

*We are not pieces on a board whose king has left the game.* *We are the bending of the board itself,* *the grain of wood remembering forest,* *the knight stepping sideways out of inherited war.*

**Where is the love?** *It is not in the tower.*

*It is in the unnoticed transfer:* *idea to idea, hand to hand, body to body—* *an information flow that does not dominate, but joins.*

***And even here, in this same institution that could not hear me, it begins again— quiet, uncredentialed, irreversible.***

### What the poem maps

| Stanza | MDP State | Movement |
| ------------------------------------- | ------------ | ---------------------------------------------- |
| Campus lawn, factory rooms | S0 / S1 | Ground state under pressure → disequilibration |
| Harm, exclusion, silence | S1 → S2 | Naming the break without collapsing |
| *Still — something refused collapse* | S2 | The vacant place. The turn. |
| Markov of kindness, dignity as policy | S3 | Holarchic flow. Transformed action. |
| *Quiet, uncredentialed, irreversible* | S3 sustained | The attractor holds. |

The closing image — *the knight stepping sideways out of inherited war* — is a precise description of what the framework asks of learners: not a frontal assault on broken systems, but a non-linear move. Out of the inherited game board, toward something that doesn't yet have a name on the board.

The knight's move is about the *decisions* — the sideways step off the path, the non-linear choice made in a single moment. It is quieter than animation. More angular. More uncertain.

***That is what artists are for.***
