# The Ground

***

### The phone in the park

I go to a nature preserve near my house without earbuds.

I learned, years ago, that nature is where the digital information flow releases its hold. The sounds of living systems — wind, birds, water, the specific silence between sounds — do something that a screen cannot do. They return me to a body that exists in time and space, in weather, in relation to other living things.

I bring my phone. It contains AI — in the camera's optical processing, in the photo organization, in what the platform surfaces next when I open the app. AI is not somewhere else. It is in the device in my pocket, running continuously, mediating every encounter between my attention and the world.

I use it to take photographs: turtles, buckeye butterflies, a parks worker measuring buckled sidewalks, feet on a path, anonymous and careful captures of embodied forms of strangers willing to pause their own solitude for a moment of encounter.

This is the ground we are standing on. Not a neutral surface. A living one. And a designed one.

### Imagining the Sounds of living systems: *AI for artistic expression*

### Systems that worked

The digital information environment was not designed by villains. It was designed by engineers, product managers, and investors working inside incentive structures that rewarded specific outcomes: engagement, growth, retention, profit. The systems they built *worked* — by every metric those incentive structures recognized.

They also produced something their designers did not fully account for: **they optimized for extraction at the precise layer where human flourishing requires something else.**

The attractor they generate is not a conspiracy. It is an emergent property of the incentive structure.

| Attractor condition | What gets selected for | What gets filtered out |
| --------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------- | ------------------------------- |
| Engagement maximization | Emotional reactivity, novelty, outrage | Reflection, uncertainty, nuance |
| Retention optimization | Manufactured urgency, reward loops | Boundary-setting, rest, exit |
| Personalization toward existing beliefs | Confirmation, reduced friction | Surprise, genuine learning |
| Content volume over quality | Speed of production | Depth, care, embodied knowing |
| Data extraction at scale | Behavioral prediction | Consent, opacity, dignity |

The invisible labor that has always balanced these forces — the care work, the teaching, the tending of relationships, the maintenance of commons — was never counted in the objective function. That crack is now under pressure. And it is, in the framework's terms, generative — because tension is where movement becomes possible.

### Where we are on the map

The Vital Intelligence Model uses a six-state MDP map to describe information environments — and the humans navigating them.

<table><thead><tr><th width="105.32421875">State</th><th width="178.94921875">Name</th><th>Description</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>S0</td><td>Frozen Order</td><td>Rigid attractor capture; no new signal enters</td></tr><tr><td>S1</td><td>Productive Chaos</td><td>Disequilibration; the old frame is breaking</td></tr><tr><td>S2</td><td>Vacant Place</td><td>Neither old frame nor new one; maximum uncertainty</td></tr><tr><td>S3</td><td>Holarchic Flow</td><td>Values-aligned movement; prosocial attractor active</td></tr><tr><td>S4</td><td>Rigid Hierarchy</td><td>Control-flow dominance; aperture collapsed by design</td></tr><tr><td>S5</td><td>Extractive Drift</td><td>Energy moving, but directed by external attractor</td></tr></tbody></table>

Most consumer AI platforms are designed — not intentionally, but structurally — to keep users in **S5 Extractive Drift**: energy is moving, but the direction is set by the platform's objective function, not the user's own values vector.

The transition from S5 to S1 requires one thing: *noticing that the drift is happening.* In a designed attractor optimized to prevent exactly this noticing, it is not simple. It is the work.

### The path forward

> **The antidote is administered through the same medium as the toxin.**

This framework is not a religion. It is not metaphysics.

It is information flow dynamics — the empirically documented behavior of complex adaptive systems under different attractor conditions. It is the neuroscience of kindness. It is prosocial dynamics — the Ostrom/Wilson framework for commons governance. It is engineering emergence at scale.

The tools are available. The evidence is sufficient. The path begins with one person developing one new habit of noticing.

*The models we build become the rooms we live in.*
