Natural intelligence, augmented by AI, navigating VUCA information ecosystems
Core Premise (MPCM)
Meaning does not arrive fully formed. In studio terms, meaning emerges through:
Material → Process → Context → Meaning (MPCM) across time.
In AI-mediated environments, Material and Process are often hidden—so people absorb shallow frames without consent, and meaning gets hijacked before it can form.
Power boundary: Engineers build M (material) and operate P (process). This is immense power—but power over Process is not the same as power over Meaning. Meaning is the domain of living minds: arts, education, and the cultivation of imagination/possibility. This boundary supports arts education in technical curricula and Academic Freedom as a condition of learning.
The MPCM River
Not a pipeline—a river. Information can flow continuously, but meaning pools only under certain conditions (stability, attention, time, and context).
M — Material: tokens · pixels · signals (engineering domain)
P — Process: routing · ranking · loops (engineering domain)
C — Context: body · incentives · relation (shared / contested)
M — Meaning: emergent · not installed (arts · education · imagination)
✦ Possibility Space
Imagination is not a dial. It is the generative negative space between structures: between Material and Process, between Context and Meaning, between one iteration and the next.
Machines can route information through M and P at massive speed and scale. What they cannot do is occupy the living gap where meaning has not yet crystallized. Protecting that gap means protecting the right to remain uncertain long enough for something genuinely new to form.
❄ Kindness Resonance (cross-cut dial)
Kindness Resonance is not niceness, or weakenss. It is: warm truth + firm limits + commitment to repair.
Kindness is the field condition that widens aperture across instruments and makes possibility space safe enough to emerge.
Micro-action: the smallest move that reduces harm and preserves learning capacity simultaneously.
The Simulationist Lens (navigator + instrument cluster)
Consider yourself a navigator flying through an information universe. You are not a passive receiver—you are an instrument cluster, continuously reading signals, orienting yourself, and choosing where to direct aperture.
Four Instruments (suits + elements)
Each instrument has a navigation metaphor, a classical element, and a somatic resonance:
♠ Spades — Somatic Gyroscope (🜃 Earth): grounds (gravity, weight, orientation)
♦ Diamonds — Cognitive Radar (🜁 Air): discerns (breath, scanning mind, hypothesis space)
♥ Hearts — Relational Compass (🜄 Water): connects (emotion, relation, repair)
♣ Clubs — Dimensional Integration (🜂 Fire): transforms across time (iteration, consolidation, developmental depth)
Important: the instruments are not a hierarchy—they are a dashboard. All four must be readable for the craft to fly true.
A — Aperture (master dial)
A = bandwidth to perceive + integrate + choose right now. Aperture determines how wide your model-space is and how quickly you collapse uncertainty into a story.
Three faces of aperture
Aₛ (Somatic / ♠): Can I sense and settle? Body bandwidth (gating condition for everything).
A꜀ (Cognitive / ♦): Can I hold more than one model? Hypothesis bandwidth (prevents premature convergence).
Aᵣ (Relational / ♥): Can I include other minds without threat? Co-regulation bandwidth (condition for learning-with-others).
When A is low: tunnel vision, compulsive clicking, urgency, contempt for uncertainty, story lock-in. Rule: if A is low, do not force convergence.
Dose ladder — widening aperture
Choose the smallest effective widening move:
Micro (60–120s): orient + breathe + stand + change posture/light
Meso (10–20m): walk outside / analog mark-making / slow movement
Macro (sleep): consolidation (deferred understanding is not lost understanding)
The Four Instruments (sub-dials)
♠ Somatic Gyroscope (🜃 Earth)
Sensing · Stabilizing · Orienting Instrument metaphor: the gyroscope. Before interpreting, sense. Before deciding, settle. If the gyroscope is destabilized, other instruments give false readings.
Aperture face: Aₛ
Sub-dials:
♠ PI — Pause & Intention Install consent before being pulled: purpose, scope, time boundary.
♠ WT — Window of Tolerance Track activation/fatigue/threat. Fight/flight/freeze/fawn patterns narrow aperture to a slit.
♠ FE — Felt Expectations “My system expects ___ (danger/rejection/urgency).” Name one expectation, then choose a dose to widen Aₛ.
♦ Cognitive Radar (🜁 Air)
Discerning · Modeling · Calibrating Instrument metaphor: radar. It sweeps continuously; it does not lock onto a single target. Cognitive aperture means holding multiple models simultaneously. Premature convergence is the enemy of learning.
Aperture face: A꜀
Sub-dials:
♦ FC — Frame/Claim Scan Name the lens (frame) AND the assertion inside it. Claim type examples: norm / identity / causal / authority / permission.
♦ CC — Confidence Calibration (T / I / F) T supported · I indeterminate · F unsupported. Micro-rule: mark at least one key point as I before sharing/escalating.
♦ MM — Multi-Model Compare “Another explanation could be ___.” Widen hypothesis space under VUCA.
♦ IE — Incentives & Externalities Include the shadow field: platform benefits, internal relief-seeking, local + non-local harms.
♥ Relational Compass (🜄 Water)
Values · Verification · Repair Instrument metaphor: the compass. It orients you to true north so you can choose. The relational compass orients by care, dignity, and non-harm across scales: self → group → society → ecology → future.
Aperture face: Aᵣ
Sub-dials:
♥ PV — Prosocial Values Field “Who is vulnerable here? What reduces harm?”
♥ VS — Verification Scale Match rigor to stakes: note uncertainty (low) → one independent source (medium) → human/institution check (high).
♥ CR — Consent & Repair Boundary: “I’m done for now.” “I’ll revisit tomorrow.” Repair: apologize, clarify, de-escalate, reconnect.
♣ Dimensional Integration (🜂 Fire)
Recursion · Metacognition · Time Instrument metaphor: the expanding sphere. Each cycle adds an axis; understanding expands in dimensions. This is developmental and cannot be rushed—only cultivated (iteration, analog practice, sleep consolidation).
Relationship to aperture: Clubs is not a 4th “aperture face.” It is the cross-time instrument that tends to widen Aₛ/A꜀/Aᵣ over episodes.
Sub-dials:
♣ RL — Recalibration Loop Loop back when captured: 1 confidence cue + 1 missing variable + 1 update condition.
♣ MU — Model Update Make learning explicit: new boundary rule / new question / new constraint / new practice.
♣ Cn — Consolidation Decide what gets deferred to sleep/time; set a reminder; analog integration counts.
Interaction Modes
Mode 0 — Drift (default)
Entertainment / distraction / social scrolling. Risk: you still absorb frames (what is normal, who is good/bad, what is urgent) and your nervous system updates autopilot without explicit learning intent.
Mode 1 — Inquiry (chosen)
Learn / decide / verify / create. Benefit: you widen aperture, slow premature convergence, and choose prosocial action with better boundaries.
Bridge principle: we do not demand constant analysis. We install tiny interventions so Drift does not become harm.
How to Use the Dashboard (30–90 seconds)
Check A + ♠ Spades first. If aperture is narrow, don’t force convergence. Choose a Micro/Meso/Macro dose.
Run ♦ Diamonds to name frames/claims, calibrate confidence (T/I/F), compare models, and include incentives/externalities.
Use ♥ Hearts to choose prosocial action, scale verification, and set consent-based boundaries.
Use ♣ Clubs to loop back when captured and integrate learning over time (sleep + iteration + analog practice).
Use ❄ Kindness to widen aperture and protect repair capacity across scales.
MPCM Overlay — Making Hidden Layers Visible
Use this overlay anytime you feel pulled, confused, or activated:
M — Material: what is this made of? text, image, voice, feed, AI summary, interface.
P — Process: what generated/amplified it? ranking, routing, persuasion loops, editing, automation, virality.
C — Context: what surrounds it? incentives, audience, timing, your nervous system state, cultural pressure.
M — Meaning (emergent): what is forming in me? emotion, assumption, normalization, identity posture.
Discernment = adding missing M/P/C so meaning does not get hijacked by shallow frames.
Fast Notation for SR2 Logs
Use 0–10 or Low/Med/High. Name the one dial that most constrained the episode, then choose one action that raises it by one notch.
Example: A:6 (Aₛ:5 A꜀:7 Aᵣ:6) / ♠PI:7 ♠WT:5 ♠FE:6 / ♦FC:6 ♦CC:5 ♦MM:4 ♦IE:6 / ♥PV:7 ♥VS:6 ♥CR:7 / ♣RL:5 ♣MU:6 ♣Cn:4 / ❄KR:8
Limiter rule: name the one dial that most constrained the episode, then choose one action that raises it by one notch.
