Making the Invisible Visible in a Generative AI Era

Universities are currently navigating generative AI through policies, guidelines, and risk frameworks. While these efforts are necessary, they do not address a more fundamental issue shaping student experience and learning outcomes:

Students and educators are operating with mismatched mental models of intelligence, learning, and authority.

This mismatch is now one of the primary sources of confusion, misuse, anxiety, and erosion of trust in educational settings.


2.1 Mental Models Shape Learning More Than Tools

A mental model is the internal representation a person uses to understand how something works.

In education, mental models influence:

  • how students interpret feedback

  • whether confusion feels like failure or growth

  • where authority is perceived to reside

  • how responsibility and authorship are understood

Generative AI systems make mental models visible by externalizing reasoning, pattern recognition, and language generation. This visibility creates an opportunity—but only if learners are taught how to interpret what they are seeing.

Without shared mental models, students may:

  • confuse fluency with understanding

  • assume AI outputs reflect truth or authority

  • misattribute responsibility to systems rather than processes

  • struggle to articulate why something “feels wrong” in an output


2.2 Humans as Natural Simulationists

At the foundation of the Vital Intelligence Model (VIM) is a simple but powerful premise:

Humans are natural simulationists.

From early childhood onward, humans continuously:

  • build internal models of the world

  • test those models through action and feedback

  • revise them based on emotional, social, and sensory input

Learning, from this perspective, is not the accumulation of facts. It is the ongoing revision of mental models.

This process occurs at both:

  • subconscious levels (emotion, intuition, pattern recognition)

  • conscious levels (language, symbols, explicit reasoning)

Educational systems that ignore this dual process risk optimizing for surface performance rather than deep learning.


2.3 Why Generative AI Exposes the Problem

Generative AI systems do not “know” in the human sense. They generate statistically likely continuations based on patterns in historical data.

However, to learners without a clear mental model:

  • outputs can appear authoritative

  • confidence can be mistaken for correctness

  • gaps and hallucinations can be difficult to detect

This creates what many students experience as:

  • epistemic disorientation

  • a sense that “the ground is shifting”

  • difficulty trusting either machines or themselves

When students lack a simulationist framework, generative AI can amplify shallow understanding rather than deepen insight.


2.4 Slopiganda and Authority Projection

A related phenomenon is the rise of what is often called slopiganda—the flood of fluent, persuasive, low-integrity symbolic content produced at scale.

From a learning perspective, slopiganda is dangerous not because it exists, but because:

  • it exploits unexamined mental models

  • it reinforces authority projection onto systems

  • it rewards speed over reflection

Without explicit instruction in model-building and revision, learners may internalize distorted narratives without realizing it.


2.5 Confusion as a Learning Signal

One of the most important reframes for education in a generative AI era is this:

Confusion is not failure. It is evidence that a mental model is being updated.

When educational environments treat confusion as a deficit:

  • students hide uncertainty

  • defensive cognition increases

  • learning narrows

When confusion is normalized and supported:

  • curiosity expands

  • reflection deepens

  • agency increases

This reframing requires intentional learning design and a shared institutional orientation.


2.6 Why Institutions Must Name This Explicitly

Individual students cannot reasonably be expected to infer accurate mental models of intelligence and learning on their own—especially in environments saturated with persuasive technology.

Educational institutions have a unique responsibility and opportunity to:

  • make mental models explicit

  • provide shared language for learning under uncertainty

  • support both subconscious and conscious model revision

This is not a matter of ideology or pedagogy preference. It is a matter of learning viability.
